Does rent reporting actually raise your credit score?

Honest version
- Rent is not a credit card. Whether it counts depends on the bureau and the scoring model your next lender uses.
- FICO 8 (still common for cards and many loans) often ignores rent. VantageScore and some FICO 9 / 10T versions are more likely to count it.
- Start free: Self rent reporting, typically all three bureaus, $0. Esusu if your building already pays. Experian Boost if the bill is Boost-eligible.
- Pay for Boom when you need back-dated months or Self’s free tier is not enough. Do not pay two apps.
- Kikoff rent is Equifax, not a 3-bureau rent product. Fine as a bonus if you already pay Kikoff. Not a reason to pick Kikoff over Self for rent.
Rent is most people’s largest on-time payment and it still does not automatically hit a credit file. That gap is the entire rent-reporting industry. The industry then oversells the gap as “this will raise your mortgage score.” Sometimes it shows up. Sometimes the lender’s model never looks at it. You should know which before you pay $10/month for two years.
What has to be true for rent to help
- You pay on time. Late rent can report too, depending on the product. That is the part ads skip.
- The service actually furnishes to a bureau. Not a dashboard. A furnisher.
- That bureau is one your next lender pulls. A TransUnion-only rent line does nothing for an Equifax-only auto lender.
- The scoring model counts rental tradelines. This is the usual failure point.

· Self Rent Reporting · $0 · Experian, Equifax, TransUnion typical · Paid add-on · Default first move
· Boom · Paid + ~$25 for 24-month back-report · Major bureaus — confirm · Yes, the reason people pay · Don’t stack with Self unless you need the back-date
· Piñata · Free core; Plus ~$5 · Free often Experian+TransUnion; Equifax on paid — confirm · Varies · Cheap, not automatically 3-bureau
· Esusu · Often $0 via landlord · Depends on property · Property-dependent · Only if the building is a partner
· Kikoff rent · Included with Credit Account; ~$50 to backdate 24 months · Equifax · Paid · Not 3-bureau. Bonus, not a rent strategy
· Bilt Mastercard · $0 AF if you get approved · It is a real card, not a rent app · n/a · Underwriting is the gate. Thin files often lose
· Experian Boost · $0 · Experian only · n/a · Bills/utilities/some rent. Does nothing for Equifax/TU
LevelCredit is the RentReporters rebrand. RentTrack is stronger when the property manager already uses it. ClearNow is a landlord payment platform, not a consumer app. Rental Kharma, Rock the Score, Credit Rent Boost: compare bureaus and price to Self/Boom before you subscribe.
Will this help a mortgage?
Ask the lender which score they pull. Many mortgages still lean on FICO models that never learned to love rent. If they pull FICO 8 across three bureaus, a rent tradeline can sit on the report and not move the number they use. That does not make rent reporting useless — it can still help VantageScore, some landlord screening, and newer FICO versions — but it is not a substitute for a real revolving and installment pair.
If a mortgage is 12 months out, a secured card plus Self’s loan (or a CU builder) is the more boring, more reliable stack. Rent reporting is the free extra, not the plan.
Who should pay for Boom
People with 12–24 months of on-time rent already sitting in a bank account who want those months on file soon, and who have confirmed Boom’s current bureau list beats Self’s free tier for their lender. If you just moved in, Self free is enough. If your landlord already runs Esusu, turn that on and stop shopping.
Late rent
Read whether the service reports delinquencies. A “credit builder” that can post a 30-day late on rent is not free upside. If your rent is shaky, do not enroll.
FAQ
Is Bilt better than rent reporting?
If you get approved, yes — you get a real revolving tradeline and you can pay rent with it. That is a credit card, not an app. Thin files should not treat Bilt as their first product.
Can I report old roommates’ rent?
You report your own on-time payments, with whatever proof the app asks for. Do not invent a lease.
Does Experian Boost replace rent reporting?
No. Boost is Experian-only and bill-network limited. Self rent can hit all three. Do Boost anyway. It takes minutes and costs $0.
