Credit repair vs credit builder: they are not the same product
Updated September 13, 2026 · Independent directory · Not a score-increase guarantee
Disclosure. AllCreditBuilderTools is an independent directory. Some links are affiliate links — we may earn a commission if you apply. That does not change rankings. The operator also works at Kikoff; Kikoff is not automatically ranked first. Rankings are by cost, bureaus, product type, and who the product is for. Fees, APRs, and bureau lists change. Confirm on the issuer’s site before you apply. This is education, not personal advice, and not a promise that your score will go up.

The split
- Credit repair challenges items already on Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. Accurate negatives usually stay. You can do this yourself for $0.
- Credit builder adds a new loan, card, or reported bill. It does not delete a collection.
- Buy a builder after you have read the reports. Do not buy a repair subscription because a YouTube ad said “delete collections.”
Search results mash these together because both ads say “improve your credit.” The mechanics are opposite. Repair looks backward at the file. A builder looks forward and furnishes a new tradeline. Paying for both at once is how people spend $150/month and still have the same charge-off.
What credit repair actually does
A repair company (Lexington Law, Credit Saint, CreditRepair.com, and a long tail of lookalikes) sends dispute letters. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, bureaus and furnishers have to investigate. If the item is unverifiable or wrong, it can come off. If it is accurate and the furnisher verifies it, it stays. That is the whole product.
Federal rules (the Credit Repair Organizations Act) also limit what these companies can promise and when they can charge. “We will raise your score 100 points or delete this collection no matter what” is marketing, not a contract you can take to court as a guarantee.
You can mail or submit the same disputes yourself. AnnualCreditReport.com is the official pull. Each bureau has a dispute flow. It is slow and ugly and free.
What a credit builder actually does
A builder is a product that reports new activity:
- Self: installment loan, 3 bureaus, money back at the end minus interest and a $9 admin fee.
- Kikoff Credit Account: $5 revolving store line, typically 3 bureaus, no deposit.
- Discover / Capital One secured cards: deposit-backed revolving, 3 bureaus, hard pull.
- Self rent reporting: rent you already pay, $0, typically 3 bureaus.
On-time payments can help. Late payments on a builder can hurt — often more than not opening it. A builder does not negotiate with a collector. It does not “pay for delete.” It adds a line.

Credit repairCredit builder
· Job · Challenge existing items · Add new history
· Works on accurate collections? · Usually no · No — those stay while new history piles on
· Works on a thin file with nothing to dispute? · No. There is nothing to repair · Yes. That is the actual use case
· Typical cost · $80–$150/month for months · $0 (Boost, Self rent, Chime) to ~$25 (Self loan) to a deposit you get back
· DIY? · Yes. Free disputes · You still have to open a real product
· Can report a late? · N/A · Yes
When repair is even in the conversation
After you pull all three reports and you see something that is wrong: mixed file, identity theft, paid account still listed as open, duplicate collection. Then dispute. If you want someone else to mail letters, that is a paid convenience, not a magic eraser. Read the contract and CROA disclosures. Cancel if they want a year up front.
If the collection is yours and accurate, the adult move is: confirm the balance, decide whether to pay, and add clean history with a builder. Time ages negatives. Repair ads skip that sentence.
Why this directory still lists repair companies
People search for them. Hiding the category does not make the ads go away. We rank them last, we say they are not tradelines, and Score Master stays hidden because “best score in days” is a red flag. If a listing still reads like a vendor tagline, treat it as unfinished — and do not apply from it.
Do not stack this
Repair subscription + Kikoff + Self + Boom + IdentityIQ monitoring is how a $5 problem becomes $120/month. Monitoring is not building either. Credit Karma and Capital One CreditWise are free.
FAQ
Can a repair company add a tradeline?
Not by disputing. Some upsell “trade line” or “authorized user” products on the side. Those are separate, often expensive, and easy to misuse. A Self or Kikoff account is a product you control.
Will a builder remove a collection?
No. It adds a new account. The collection ages and may still be scored until it falls off.
I already paid for Lexington Law. Should I cancel?
Read what they have actually disputed and what came back verified. If the remaining items are accurate, you are paying for letters that will lose. Keep the login long enough to export the file, then decide. Open a builder only if you can pay that too without missing a rent payment.
