Disclosure. AllCreditBuilderTools is an independent directory. Some links are affiliate links — we may earn a commission if you apply. That does not change rankings. The operator also works at Kikoff; Kikoff is not automatically ranked first. Rankings are by cost, bureaus, product type, and who the product is for. Fees, APRs, and bureau lists change. Confirm on the issuer’s site before you apply. This is education, not personal advice, and not a promise that your score will go up.June 2026 change. Discover it Secured stopped taking new applications on June 2, 2026 during the Capital One integration. It was the default “best secured card” on this site. Until Discover/Capital One say it is open again, do not send anyone to apply. Capital One Platinum Secured is the national no-annual-fee card that is still a default open recommendation.Quick pick (open now)- Best no-annual-fee secured card: Capital One Platinum Secured — $49 / $99 / $200 deposit options, $0 AF, 3 bureaus, review around 6 months. No rewards.- Best rewards secured card that’s open: Capital One Quicksilver Secured — ~1.5% cash back, $200 deposit, $0 AF.- Best $0 / no deposit: Chime Credit Builder if you will use Chime checking. Not a classic deposit card, but it reports as revolving credit.- Best no-credit-check: OpenSky Secured Visa — you pay an annual fee for skipping the underwrite. Last resort, not first pick.
A secured credit card is a revolving account backed by your cash. The deposit usually equals the limit. Use it like a grown-up card: small spend, pay in full, keep utilization low. The issuer reports to the bureaus. After a stretch of on-time use, a decent issuer refunds the deposit and converts you to unsecured. That last part is why Capital One and Discover (when open) beat fee mills like First Progress.

Capital One Platinum Secured — default open pick
No annual fee. Reports to all three bureaus. Some applicants open a $200 limit with $49 or $99 down, which is the entire reason this card exists next to Discover’s typical $200. There are no rewards. Pay in full so the APR never matters. Capital One has a real unsecured family to graduate into. Do not apply for five Capital One cards in a month.
Quicksilver Secured — if you have the $200
Same issuer, cash back. If Discover remains paused and you can freeze $200, this is the national rewards secured card. If you cannot freeze $200, Platinum’s smaller deposit wins.
Chime — when a deposit is the blocker
Chime Credit Builder is the product we recommend when someone cannot (or should not) park $200. You must use Chime checking. You spend only what you load. It reports. It will not graduate into a Capital One Venture. That’s fine. See the apps guide.
Self Visa — only if you already want Self
Secured Visa, ~$100 deposit, no typical hard pull, $0 intro annual fee then about $25. It is the revolving half of the Self stack, not a Discover replacement. If you are not taking the Self loan, open Chime or Capital One instead.
OpenSky and the fee cards
OpenSky’s original card skips the credit check. You pay an annual fee for that. OpenSky Plus exists with a credit check and better terms — use that if you can pass it. First Progress, Applied Bank, and similar “platinum select” names are deposit + annual fee + high APR. They report. They are what you use after Capital One says no and you refuse Chime/Kikoff.
Bilt is not a secured card
Bilt Mastercard is an unsecured rent-rewards card. If you get approved, paying rent on it is better than paying Boom. If you have a thin file, you may not get approved. Do not treat Bilt as the first product on a no-credit profile.
How to use a secured card without hurting yourself
- Put a recurring $5–$20 bill on it, or one grocery trip a month.- Turn on autopay for statement balance, not minimum.- Keep utilization under ~10% if you can; under 30% at worst.- Do not close it the week after you graduate. Age of accounts matters.- One hard pull, then stop shopping for 6 months.FAQIs a secured card better than Kikoff? If you can get a $0-AF card from Capital One (or Discover when open) and will pay in full, yes — you can spend it everywhere and you may graduate. If you cannot pass a hard pull or cannot park a deposit, Kikoff or Chime is the better first revolving account. Will the deposit earn interest?Sometimes a little, often nothing you should care about. The deposit is collateral, not an investment. When will Discover it Secured reopen? We do not know. Capital One has said it plans to relaunch later. Check Discover’s application page. Until it is open, this guide’s live pick is Capital One.
