Disclosure. AllCreditBuilderTools is an independent directory. Some links are affiliate links — we may earn a commission if you apply. That does not change rankings. The operator also works at Kikoff; Kikoff is not automatically ranked first. Rankings are by cost, bureaus, product type, and who the product is for. Fees, APRs, and bureau lists change. Confirm on the issuer’s site before you apply. This is education, not personal advice, and not a promise that your score will go up.Quick pick- Best free 3-bureau: Self Rent Reporting. $0 for ongoing rent. Phone/utility is a paid add-on and may be TransUnion-only.- Best if your building already uses it: Esusu. Often landlord-paid. Turn it on before you subscribe to anything.- Best DIY with back-dating: Boom — no landlord required, typically 3 bureaus, ~$5/mo billed annually, ~$25 to back-report up to 24 months.- Best cheap/free DIY: Piñata’s free tier. Confirm which bureaus the free plan actually hits.- Best if you can get the card: Bilt Mastercard. That’s a real credit card, not an app.
Rent is the biggest bill most thin-file renters already pay on time. Most FICO 8 models ignore it unless a furnisher sends it. Rent reporting services exist to be that furnisher. They only help if (1) you pay on time, (2) they report to a bureau your next lender uses, and (3) that lender’s scoring model counts rent. Late rent can report late. That is not a footnote.Mortgage reality. Many purchase mortgages still use older FICO models that do not treat rent like a credit card. Experian Boost is Experian-only. Kikoff rent is Equifax-only. If a lender pulls all three files, a single-bureau rent line is a partial product. Self’s free 3-bureau rent (confirm current list) is the reason it stays the default.Rent reporters compared

Start with whatever is already free
- Ask your property manager if Esusu, RentTrack, or ResidentCredit is on. If yes, stop shopping.- If not, open Self Rent Reporting. It is free for rent and typically hits three bureaus.- Add Experian Boost the same day ($0, Experian-only, still worth it).- Pay Boom only if you need 24-month back-reporting and Self’s paid back-date is worse on price or bureaus that week.- If you already pay Kikoff $5, turn on Kikoff rent for Equifax. Do not use it as your only rent product if you need Experian and TransUnion.Boom vs Self vs Piñata
This is the consumer-app triangle. Self wins on $0 ongoing 3-bureau rent. Boom wins as a dedicated reporter with a clean back-date SKU. Piñata wins on a free/cheap tier if you can live with fewer bureaus. Do not subscribe to all three. Pick one furnisher for rent.
Bilt vs rent apps
If a real unsecured card reports your rent because you paid it with the card, you do not need an app. Bilt is that card, with extra spend rules for points. Approval is the gate. Thin file? App first, Bilt later.
FAQDoes rent reporting always raise FICO?No. It depends on the scoring model, the bureau, and whether you already have stronger tradelines. It is still worth doing when it is free, because the downside of on-time reporting is close to zero. Can late rent hurt me?Yes. If the service furnishes lates, you have given a landlord-shaped weapon to the bureaus. Only enroll if you actually pay on time.Is Kikoff rent reporting enough? It is enough for Equifax, and it is free with the membership. It is not enough if your next lender is an Experian or tri-merge shop. Pair it with Self or Boom, or don’t treat rent as your whole plan.
